Our Pricing
Our Approach to Pricing
At The Scent Lab, pricing is built with intention, consistency, and a level of transparency that is rarely shared in this space.
Every fragrance sample is priced directly from the cost of the fragrance itself, then finished with a margin structure designed to account for preparation, presentation, and fulfillment—rather than arbitrary markups or opaque pricing.
Our pricing formula:
Price = Fragrance Cost ÷ (1 − Margin)
Margins are applied deliberately and decrease as size increases, ensuring larger decants remain value-oriented while smaller sizes reflect the realities of preparing very small quantities to the same standard.
Margin Structure
Margins are set by size:
• 1 mL — approximately 50–55%
• 2 mL — approximately 48%
• 3 mL — approximately 45%
• 5 mL — approximately 40%
• 10 mL — approximately 32%
• 30 mL — approximately 25%
Higher margins on smaller decants reflect the disproportionately higher material cost and hands-on effort required to prepare small quantities, even though they use the same bottles, tools, labeling, and fulfillment process as larger sizes.
Materials, Fulfillment & Exceptions
Packaging and fulfillment costs are not itemized per product, but are absorbed within the margin structure. These include decant containers, labels, protective packaging, shipping materials, equipment, and preparation time.
In rare cases—such as exceptionally scarce, discontinued, or difficult-to-source fragrances—pricing may deviate modestly from this structure to reflect availability and replacement cost. These exceptions are applied sparingly and thoughtfully, and never without clear justification.
Finishing Touches
Once pricing is calculated:
- 1 mL samples are rounded to the nearest .50 or .99
- All other sizes are finished at .99
The result is pricing that feels measured, fair, and intentional—grounded in real costs, communicated openly, and designed to respect both the fragrance and the customer.
